When it is exposed, because the neighbouring plot is empty or the building next door is lower, it takes rain and sun directly, and it was often never properly protected. The solution is usually to repair the cracks and protect it with a waterproof, breathable coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why party walls cause problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They were built on the assumption that another building would cover them.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>They often have a poor finish or no coating at all.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>They take wind-driven rain over their full height.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The joint with the neighbouring building is left open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to tell if the damp comes from the party wall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The stains appear on the wall facing the exposed side.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>They get worse after rain with wind from that side.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>From outside you can see cracks, unprotected brick or loose render.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>If the stain appears mainly in winter, in corners and behind furniture, it may be condensation.
